Carry Jesus Forward
Carry Jesus Forwad!
Of all the events which occurred during the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg, few of them have been more studied and debated and romanticized than Longstreet’s Assault… more commonly known as Pickett’s Charge.
General George Picket had one of the largest divisions in the Army of Northern Virginia. The charge barely lasted 50 minutes! But in that time, over one half of his division were killed, wounded, and captured—including all three of his brigadier generals in the charge. One of those generals was Lewis Armistead. Armistead was the only one of the three to break through the Union line! In fact, he actually thought the Confederates had won that battle, when he was suddenly shot down!
The flag bearer who was in charge of carrying and advancing the standard saw Armistead fall. For a moment, he totally forgot about his duties and ran to help the general back up. But general Armistead pushed him away ordering, “Carry the colors forward! Carry the colors forward!”
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 3:12-14 NIV
What about us? The new year of 2012 has started. Whatever happened last year is now in the past. Like the apostle Paul, let us press on with lifting up Jesus and carrying Him forward in our attitudes and actions this new year.
