Ignoring The Mirror
Elizabeth grew older she tried very hard to hide the results of her age. She wore elaborate wigs and ruffs, and lavishly jeweled costumes to draw attention away from her wrinkled face. In her efforts, she even went so far as to ban all mirrors from her palaces! Why outlaw mirrors? Because, unlike the young men in her court, mirrors told the truth about her appearance.
Some people refuse to consider God’s Word for the same reason. It tells the truth about us. The law of God is like a mirror that shows exactly how we look. It reveals sins in our life and shows our ugly character for what it is. What do some people do about it? They attempt to get rid of the mirror! But does that really change anything? Ignoring the mirror does not change the reality of our age. Neither does ignoring God’s Word change the reality of truth.
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.”
